PHILIPPINES – Huawei‘s sub-brand Honor is set to release another smartphone in the Philippines, shortly after releasing some midrangers on the previous months. The Honor Play, dubbed as the ‘ultimate mid-range killer’, is set to launch to the public this August 11th, with specs that can compare even to the flagships.

The gaming-centric smartphone is priced same as other mid-range devices such as the Samsung Galaxy J8 and Huawei’s own Nova 3i. It’s headlining feature would be the inclusion of Huawei’s flagship SoC, Kirin 970, which is seen on flagships such as Huawei P20 and P20 Pro as well as the Mate 10 series. The other mid-ranger from Huawei, the Nova 3, is the other which uses the said chipset.

The said smartphone will be the first to sport the GPU Turbo technology from Huawei, which promises up to 60-percent increase in efficiency and lower energy consumption by up to 30-percent.

The screen on the Honor Play is a 6.3-inch, Full HD LCD panel with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, making it comparable to the Nova 3 and 3i. It also comes with today’s midrange starter pack specifications – 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal, expandable storage (uses SIM 2 slot). It is also notably sporting a higher battery pack at 3,750mAh, ideal for longer gaming sessions and entertainment consumption.

Aside from those, there’s also a dual rear camera setup with 16- and 2-megapixel sensors, while up front on the notch is a 16-megapixel selfie camera. All of that on top of Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1, Huawei’s own Android flavor.

We cannot doubt that the Honor Play is one of the best — if not the best — bang-for-the-buck mid-range smartphone today. On paper, it seems interesting that it even compares to Huawei’s own smartphones.

While there’s also a 6GB RAM variant called Honor Play Cool with a fantastic back design, Honor Philippines doesn’t mentioned anything about the said variant right away.
