Vivo NEX finally brings us the TRULY BEZEL-LESS smartphone we wanted
After months of waiting, Vivo is finally turning their concept phone APEX into a reality with their newest flagship smartphone called “Vivo NEX“.
First showcased last February at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the concept of all-screen device has been finally achieved without any notches, which raises the bar for the bezel-less game. The NEX has achieved an astonishingly 91-percent screen-to-body ratio, by putting the sensors which are usually on the front frame underneath the display (i.e. fingerprint reader, earpiece), as well as making the front camera pop out from the top of the phone only when it’s needed.
Vivo has announced two variants for the NEX, the one with the highest spec being the NEX S while the lower-end one would be the NEX A.
The NEX S (NEX Ultimate – China) sports the 2018 flagship smartphone starter pack, such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. It also has a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED screen with 2316 x 1080 resolution (19.3:9 aspect ratio) & with the 91-percent screen-to-body ratio. There’s also the indisplay fingerprint reader which first debuted on Vivo’s X20UD, and a 4000mAh battery pack to power all of these.
On the other hand, the lower-end Vivo NEX A is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, which is probably aiming to make the phone’s price lower than its higher-end sibling. It shares the same sAMOLED screen with the NEX S, but has lower RAM at 6GB and only 128GB of internal storage. Aside from those, the NEX A will not sport the indisplay fingerprint sensor, instead, a traditional fingerprint reader is installed on the back of the device.
In terms of optics, Vivo just included the usual dual rear camera configuration, with a 12MP f/1.8 + 5MP f/2.4 combo, while in the front, the pop-up camera has an 8MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0.
Software-wise, Vivo equips the phones with their own touch of Android 8.1 Oreo – their FunTouch OS 4.0.
Just like Samsung’s Bixby, Vivo is also introducing their digital AI assistant called ‘Jovi’, and there’s also a dedicated button for it. Like with other Vivo phones, its AI-based features aids camera and photo functions and apps.
Vivo has done the amazing feat of going truly bezel-less by removing the earpiece and instead, replacing it with the new technology (which is similar to Xiaomi’s Mix and some other TVs unveiled at this year’s CES), which the company calls ‘Screen SoundCasting Technology’. What it does is simply vibrating the screen to deliver better sounding bass and softer treble, compared to a traditional earpiece.
